Bigfoot Bjornsen–Vincent Indelicato partnership

Inherent Vice

Bigfoot Bjornsen–Vincent Indelicato partnership describes the long-running LAPD partnership between Bigfoot Bjornsen and Vincent Indelicato, and the grief left by Indelicato’s murder. The relationship is revealed indirectly: Bigfoot no longer rode with or spoke about his former partner, while his silence concealed profound mourning and may have shaped his decision to keep the investigation alive through Doc Sportello.

Partnership and Indelicato’s Death

Indelicato had been Bigfoot’s partner for many years. The connection becomes explicit when Doc reads the account of Adrian Prussia’s case: Indelicato’s body was identified by the arresting officer, his longtime partner, Lieutenant Christian F. Bjornsen. Prussia had claimed that he mistook Indelicato for an intruder and fired in the belief that he had seen a gun. The account established that Bigfoot’s former partner had been killed by Prussia.

Grief and Silence

Bigfoot’s conduct after the murder had left the relationship unspoken. He no longer rode with Indelicato and did not talk about him or even mention his name. Once Doc connects the case file to Bigfoot, that silence reads not as indifference but as mourning: Doc recognizes Bigfoot’s melancholy as deep grief for his partner.

The Investigation Bigfoot Set in Motion

The case file also shows that Prussia repeatedly escaped the consequences of murder charges. After reading it, Doc suspects a connection between Prussia and elements of the LAPD, and reasons that Bigfoot has brought a civilian private investigator into the case rather than pursuing a violent confrontation or a solitary internal campaign. Doc’s interpretation is that Bigfoot’s choice exposed him to danger while giving the investigation an outside channel. The partnership thus persists in altered form: Indelicato is absent, but the weight of his death helps explain Bigfoot’s actions and the investigation Doc continues.
